the cleanup system that finally worked

a flat sheet, a dustpan, and one rule. that is the whole system.

every parent stalls on sensory play for the same reason: the mess. here is the setup that got us past it.

put a cheap flat sheet or an old shower curtain under the tray. when play is done, lift the four corners and funnel everything back in. that one move recovers about ninety percent of what escapes.

keep a small dustpan and brush beside the tray and make sweeping part of the game. children told to clean up resist. children handed a tiny brush while still playing usually just do it.

the one rule that matters: the bin stays over the sheet. not a rule about being careful, a rule about where. rules about where are enforceable. “careful” is not.
