sensory play does not stop at five

six, eight, ten. the bin still works. you just have to change the ask.

somewhere around school age, parents start assuming sensory bins are for littler children. they are not. the play just needs a different frame.

for older children, stop calling it a sensory bin and give it a job. a dig. a colour-sorting race against a timer. a small world they build and photograph. an excavation with a written log.

add real tools: tweezers, funnels, a small set of scales, measuring cups with actual measurements on them. an eight-year-old will happily spend an hour on the same pasta if there is a task attached to it.

the calming benefit does not expire either. plenty of adults keep a small tray on a desk. there is nothing childish about it.
